An icon of bold Kiwi Chardonnay, the Clearview Reserve is mostly from quite old vines (nearly 30 years old) and fermented in new oak. The fine texture and bright citrus fruit provides balance to the wine's huge presence and lush array of toasty, mealy and savoury notes. Softens nicely with age but even now it's a mouthfull of Chardonnay satisfaction. A stalwart classic for very good reason.

Its Origins

In 1986 Tim Turvey purchased a property at Te Awanga, Hawke’s Bay. Together with business partner Helma van den Berg, they hand grafted and planted the first vines in the winter of 1988. Clearview Estate Winery Ltd was established for the first red wine vintage in 1989. Vineyard plantings continued at 3 acres per annum. Tim and Helma also designed and built the winery, adding to the cellar door and restaurant as the business grew. The Estate grows 11 grape varieties from 19.4 hectares (48 acres) of Te Awanga vineyards. They intensively manage and prune their vines for low yields of quality fruit. The seaside location has a moderating influence and they often enjoy an extended ripening period well into autumn. The clay and loam soils sit over deep beds of free draining river shingle. Leased land at Gimblett Road provides Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Big, rich and creamy chardonnay with peach, tree fruits, oyster shell plus a hint of butter and hazelnut and spicy oak flavours. A complex wine, with impressive purity and energy. Taut and edgy.” Drink 2018 - 2024

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"For his premium Chardonnay label, winemaker Tim Turvey aims for a 'big, grunty, upfront' style ? and hits the target with ease. It's typically a hedonist's delight ? an arrestingly bold, intense, savoury, mealy, complex wine with layers of flavour. The 2017 vintage (5*) was hand-picked from vines up to 30 years old at Te Awanga, fermented and matured for 11 months in French oak barriques (42 per cent new), and given a full, softening malolactic fermentation. Bright, light lemon/green, it is fragrant and full-bodied,with deep, peachy, toasty flavours, showing notable vigour and complexity, invigorating acidity, excellent harmony and a powerful finish. Coupling a sense of youthful drive with lots of drink-young appeal, it should break into full stride from 2020 onwards."
