A seriously undervalued red from a high altitude area that consists of old unirrigated bush vines. A beautifully rich Monastrell (Mourvedre) from Spain much like the Bandol Wines of Southern France, but at a fraction of the price. This is a classic of the ripe and satisfying, sweet-fruited and spicy Monastrell style. But it's sophisticated too, beautifully made and offering Monastrell's nice savoury dimension behind all that richness. "A true bargain in its finest vintage to date", this under the radar red is a Caro's a staff favourite for the price -- impress the guests!

88% Monastrell and 12% Garnacha

Its Origins

Bodegas Casa Castillo is an unexpected discovery and a wonderful one. It is located on the plateau of the underrated wine region, Jumilla, with a 174-hectare vineyard which enjoys a high altitude and the cooling influence of the Mediterranean. Any lovers of Bandol wines should take note of Casa Castillo; the grape varieties they use are led by Monastrell (Mourvèdre). These are old bush vines that yield very small amounts of highly concentrated juice. A modern approach to winemaking is taken, with cold macerations to retain freshness and new French oak for high quality tannins and structure. The wines are generally bottled unfiltered to allow them to be as expressive as possible and they are a bargain for the quality produced.

What The Critics Say

92/100 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Luis Gutierrez

"The 2017 Monastrell has some 12% Garnacha, and in 2018, it will probably have almost 20% Garnacha; at that point, they will remove the Monastrell name from the label and sell the wine as Casa Castillo, with no varietal mentioned. They have decided that the blend of Monastrell with Garnacha makes sense, so they've been increasing the percentage of Garnacha in their vineyards and reducing the Syrah, a variety they think makes less sense on their property. This has notes of fresh fruit with a spicy touch and is quite pure, not reflecting heat at all. The palate is juicy, vibrant and tasty, with super fine tannins and a spicy finish. A blend of 20-something plots, this wine reflects the general character of the estate. It has 15% alcohol, reflecting the natural conditions, but with an incredible balance that makes the alcohol feel perfectly integrated. A true bargain in its finest vintage to date. They produced around 186,000 bottles of this wine. The same blend is bottled throughout the year. What I tasted was bottled in January 2019." Drink 2019 - 2022

90/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds (2015 vintage)

"Deep, bright rimmed violet color. Powerful dark berry, licorice and woodsmoke qualities on the nose, along with a hint of peppery spices that build with air. Chewy and focused on the palate, spice-tinged black/blue fruit flavors and a subtle touch of gaminess. Rich yet energetic in style, delivering impressive finishing thrust and dusty tannins that frame lingering dark fruit."
