Bruno Rocca’s parents bought the estate's current property in the 1950‘s when they moved to Rabaja from Barbaresco. Bruno took over the estate when his father died in 1978. As a consummate modernist, Bruno uses modern technology to produce wines with tremendous intensity of fruit balanced by the characteristic Piemontese structure and a judicious use of oak. His wines look, smell and taste like real Nebbiolo and unlike an increasing number of other Piemonte producers, he never feels the need to add a certain extra something to deepen the colour or round out the palate. Bruno started bottling in 1978 and since then has risen to the top of the quality tree in this area, producing a Barbaresco and the single vineyard Rabaja Barbaresco. His daughter, Luisa now works with him at the estate as the marketing manager.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner
"The classic Bruno Rocca 2017 Barbaresco surprisingly reveals cool-vintage aromas from what was in fact a warm growing season. When given ample time to open, this pretty Nebbiolo offers a long list of aromatic characteristics, starting off with a dusty note of white calcium that spans out to broad aromas of purple fruits and spice. However, that delicate mineral note is the wine's distinguishing factor, and it adds grace and enormous elegance to the finished results. You usually don't get this level of detail or finesse in the hot years, but this wine pulls it off without a hitch." Drink 2021 - 2035
91/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
"The 2017 Barbaresco is the only Barbaresco from Rocca in this vintage, as hail wiped out large portions of Rabajà and Currà (which are normally vineyard designates at this address) along with Fausoni, Marcorino and San Cristoforo (which go into the straight bottling). Bright red cherry fruit, mint, chalk, white pepper and citrus give the 2017 a very distinctive upper register to match its slightly nervous personality. Despite all the challenges of the year, the 2017 is very attractive. I would prefer to drink it over the next 10-15 years, once the tannins soften a touch."
16.5/20 JancisRobinson.com, Walter Speller
"Neive. Tasted blind. Just mid ruby with orange tinges. Marzipan cherry nose with hints of fruit cake, but much more inviting than it sounds. Elegant, supple palate of fully ripe fruit with underlying powdery tannins and a hint of fruit cake. Fully ready now. (WS)." Drink 2020 - 2028
