A beautifully clean and fresh Sauvignon from Waipara, with plump texture and perfect balance. Subtle tropical fruit and yeast lees aging gives body and flesh to the refreshing green fruits, herbals, and mineral notes that no good Sav would be without. As good as any Marlborough wine but with a certain X factor, this is classy stuff from Boneline and this up-and-coming region. Check this out.

Sauvignon Blanc

Its Origins

Boneline are a Waipara operation with a serious focus on terroir. Waipara’s lime-rich soils and nearly identical climate to Chablis allow Boneline to explore stylistic bridge points between the more restrained French and more brightly fruited characteristics of New Zealand terroir wines. The name Boneline itself invokes a network of ideas linking their wines and terroir to the primordial history of the site, directly referring to fossilised fish bones that have been found around the Waipara River - which also appear on their labels - and indirectly referring to the lime in the soil, itself a residue of fish calcium that forms the various bone-like substrata of many Waipara vineyards and makes the region such a special place for wine. Bringing to their work a broad range of human and marketing as well as winemaking talents, Boneline look set to define new possibilities for their exceptional place and its offerings.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2017 vintage

"passionfuit — green apple — Thai basil — lively flinty crunch. Classic sauvignon blanc aromas of gooseberry — passionfruit — elderflower — herb & flint. In the mouth, bright focussed tropical fruit, grapefruit & citrus liveliness — overlying gentle restraint, elegance of line & groundingly good perfect grape sugar / acid balance."

4.5 Stars Michael Cooper (2014 vintage)

"Maturing very gracefully, the 2014 vintage (4.5*), tasted in December 2017, was grown at Waipara, in North Canterbury, and fermented and lees-aged for 10 months in French oak casks. Light lemon/green, it is a distinctive wine, full-bodied and tightly structured, with vibrant, ripe tropical-fruit flavours, showing good complexity, a minerally streak, and a long, dry finish. Drink now."
