La Roche de Vergisson is hard to miss when driving south from the Côte d’Or to the hamlet of Vergisson. The massive rock looms over the small town like a massive ship’s prow. On almost all sides are some of the finest Chardonnay vines in France. This is the epicenter for intense, mineral driven French Chardonnay. -- Lying in the shadow of this grand rock is one of the finest estates in all of Burgundy and unquestionably the master of Vergisson, Domaine Daniel et Julien Barraud. With holdings in the best and oldest vineyards in the region, the wines are a PhD level course in world-class Chardonnay. -- The viticultural history of the Barraud family began in 1905, when Jean-Marie Barraud first purchased parcels in Vergisson, the highest point in the Mâconnais. Since that time, Daniel Barraud, along with his son Julien and wife Martine (the master of the vines), have turned his family’s domaine into the benchmark producer of the region and a must-have for all Burgundy lovers. The heights reached by this storied producer mandate that they must now be compared to the best of the Côtes d’Or. This is simply white Burgundy at its finest – and most reasonably priced. -- Skurnik Wines
What The Critics Say
87-90/100 Burghound, Allen Meadows
"A ripe but cool nose combines notes of white peach with those of tangerine peel and a hint of wood. There is excellent volume and mid-palate fat to the plump but energetic medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent richness and a mouth coating finish."
90/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, William Kelley (2016 vintage)
"The 2016 Saint-Véran En Crèches was also showing well, exhibiting aromas of honeyed peaches, spring flowers and a classy top note of mint. On the palate, it's full-bodied, chewy and concentrated, with a tight-knit core and an almost phenolic sense of structure. Like the Mâcon-Vergisson La Roche, this is fermented and matured in barrels, but these soils are richer in clay, which helps to explain the wine's density and mid-palate weight."
90/100 Vinous, Stephen Tanzer (2016 vintage)
"(barely half of a normal crop was made here; done entirely in fûts and demi-muids, including one new demi-muid): Pale, green-tinged yellow. Sexy mineral-tinged aromas of ripe citrus fruits, lime blossom and subtle herbs. Very ripe, full wine with captivating sweetness and palate-saturating texture. But firm acidity and underlying minerality energize the middle palate and give the wine cut. Finishes broad, dry and classic. Incidentally, Julien Barraud noted that the 2007 version of this wine is tasting great right now."
