A special and quite rare red variety from the region of Valdeorras, Spain. Organically grown and dry farmed on steep hillside, the gnarly old Mencia vines that supply this delicious red all but typify the extreme quality-to-value offered by Spain's ancient (but less famous) regions. With the richness of spanish red but a freshness and aromatic lift more similar to Cabernet Franc, the Avancia Mencia is both charming and satisfying for the price.

Its Origins

Bodegas Avancia is owned by Jorge Ordonez. It lies snuggled in the slate dominant mountainsides of Valdeorras, high above the Sil River. Named for the extensive gold mining that the Romans conducted in this area, (Val-de-Oras roughly translates to Valley-of-Gold in Latin) Valdeorras is home to the finest terroir for growing two of Spain’s most important indigenous grapes – Godello and Mencía.Jorge Ordonez is the owner of a dynamic group of well branded labels and wineries focussed on bringing Spain's incredible value proposition to the world market. From key holdings across many of Spain’s regions - some less famous, but all wildly undervalued for the available climate, gnarly old vines and terroir - the Ordonez-group produce large volumes of inexpensive labels at quality levels that are testing experts’ vocabulary for superlatives. They do this by employing the best winemakers and modern technologies but, more importantly, by staying on song: not getting sidetracked by international varieties but on the contrary respecting and tapping Spain’s deepest resource - local tradition and local varietals - allowing the group to convert forgotten local vineyards into into stunning global assets overnight. As the world wakes up to Spain’s distinctive regional offerings, the chances are Jorge Ordonez and friends have already made them your favourite drop.

What The Critics Say

91/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds

"Youthful violet color. Powerful cassis, cherry-cola and licorice scents, along with hints of woodsmoke and dark chocolate on the deeply perfumed nose. In a broad, weighty style for the region, offering palate-coating dark fruit flavors that are sharpened by a hint of cracked pepper. Clings impressively on the youthfully tannic finish, leaving a hint of bitter chocolate behind." Drink 2022 - 2028
