Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Bone-dry chenin blanc with appealing Granny Smith apple, oyster shell, mineral and lime juice flavours. A very appealing and age-worthy wine. In youth, at least, it is a taut, high acid wine with absolutely classic varietal flavours. My cellaring estimate is conservative 18/10/2018." Drink 2018 - 2027
5 Stars Michael Cooper
"Offering great value, the 2017 vintage (5*) was hand-picked in the Southern Valleys and partly fermented with indigenous yeasts in old oak barrels. A fully dry style (1.9 grams/litre of residual sugar), it is pale lemon/green, with a scented bouquet. Mouthfilling and vibrantly fruity, with a real sense of youthful drive and vigour, it has strong, lemony, slightly appley flavours, a minerally streak, a subtle seasoning of oak and a tightly structured, lingering finish. Best drinking 2020+."

Fruity and varietal expression of Chenin Blanc with aromas of fresh crunchy red apple, quince and citrus. a light sweet herb note and wet stone mineral suggestions. Dry, crisp and refreshing on the palate with salivating acidity and flavours that reflect the nose. Balanced lengthy finish, varietal and floral too with a touch of honey suckle. Drink now and through 2026.
