2017 Astrolabe Marlborough Pinot Noir

93 Points Cameron Douglas MS

A beautiful example of a fuller-bodied Marlborough style. The Province is not a wine that shouts like some, but is instead subtly generous in that alluring and savoury way that Pinot should be at its best. Another delicious offering from master winemaker Simon Waghorn, and a snapshot at the bright future Marlborough has in elegant Pinot.

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Cameron Douglas MS

“An attractive, fruity, floral and varietal bouquet with aromas of ripe red berry fruits, red plum and currant wrapped up in a shroud of toasty wood spices. Youthful, tense, fruity and dry on the palate. Dark cherry and baking spices, plum and toasty wood, tart strawberry and stony minerality. Well made, but very youthful and tense with firm tannins and plenty of acidity. Ready now with food, best from 2022 through 2026+.” OCT 20

4.5 Stars Michael Cooper

“The 2017 vintage was grown in the Southern Valleys (85 per cent) and at Kekerengu (15 per cent), hand-picked, fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured for 10 months in French oak barriques. Bright ruby, it is a powerful, full-bodied red, with strong, plummy, spicy flavours, an earthy streak, good complexity and a fairly firm finish. Best drinking 2021+.”

90/100 Rebecca Gibb MW

"A savory and elegant Pinot Noir that fills the mouth with cool, elegant fruit. Hailing predominantly from the richer soils of the region’s Southern Valleys, this midweight example has some additional substance, and the tannins envelop the mouth with a finegrained texture. The finish bursts with freshness and is redolent of damson, raspberries, woodsmoke and spice.”
