An elegant and nearly dry Pinot Gris from Marlborough masters, Astrolabe. Fresh apple and pear fruit are beautifully crisp and with a nice mineral zing, offering a harmony that is stridently juicy and refreshing. Distinctively balanced for a Kiwi Gris and a hallmark of Astrolabe's clean, classy style.

Pinot Gris

Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

92/100 Bob Campbell MW

"“Ripe and reasonably weighty pinot gris, with classic fresh pear and honeysuckle avours plus a dash of lime and citrus. A fresh and lively wine with subliminal sweetness and a refreshingly dry nish. A smooth-textured and appealing wine.” October 11th, 2018." Drink 2018 - 2022

90/100 Outstanding Cameron Douglas MS

"Vibrant and striking bouquet of Gris with a fresh crunchy pear and apple attack, a mix of white spice and whisper of pear skin. Silky texture with avours that reect the nose, refreshing acid line, ne phenolics and ne nish. 2018." Drink 2018 - 2021

4 Stars Michael Cooper

"Drier than most New Zealand Pinot Gris, the 2017 vintage (4*) was grown at four sites in the Wairau Valley, Awatere Valley and further south, at Kekerengu, and mostly hand-picked. Fresh and full-bodied, it has generous, citrusy, peachy avours, balanced acidity, and a basically dry nish (3.9 grams/litre of residual sugar).”
