Chardonnay is stealing the limelight in Marlborough. Simon Waghorn from Astrolabe cut his teeth making Chardonnay in Gisborne, and this organically-grown Marlborough wine puts his knowledge on display. Weighty and full but with vibrant aromatics, defined fruit and minerally freshness: this is why Marlborough Chard is underpriced. But Astrolabe have known that for years. Try it.

Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

92/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Aromatic, high energy chardonnay with apple, citrus, toasty yeast lees and nutty oak flavours. A fruit-focused chardonnay with a suggestion of salty mineral character. 21 JAN 2019." Drink 2019 - 2023“

93/100 Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier (2016 vintage)

"Pure, varietal, fresh and lifted chardonnay bouquet with aromas and flavours of sweet, ripe white peach, lemon and lemon peel, raw cashew and toasty wood spices. Youthful with bright acidity, light creamy texture with flavours of vanilla and new wood. Overall balanced and well made. Best drinking from early 2018 through 2024.”

4 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 vintage)

"The 2016 vintage (4*) was hand-picked at two sites, in the lower Wairau Valley and the Southern Valleys, and fermented and matured for 10 months in French oak barriques and puncheons. Drinking well now, it is a bright, light lemon/green, mouthfilling, sweet-fruited wine, with generous, vibrant grapefruit and peach flavours, biscuity notes adding complexity, balanced acidity and a slightly creamy texture. Drink now to 2020."
