Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2016 vintage)
"Typically grassy Awatere Valley sauvignon blanc, with classic tomato leaf, nettle, chalky mineral and capsicum flavours. Nicely weighted wine with a dry, but not austere, texture. Impressive concentration and length 26/10/2016." Drink 2016 - 2021
90/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown (2016 vintage)
"The 2016 Valleys Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc has the classic Awatere herbal-led nose with delicate underlying notes of lemongrass, lime leaves and yuzu. The light-bodied palate is dry and refreshing with great intensity and an earthy/mineral finish." Drink 2016 - 2018
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 vintage)
Grown at two sites in the Awatere Valley, the classy 2016 vintage (5*) is a very typical sub-regional style, currently in full stride. Light lemon/green, it is full-bodied and bone-dry, with pure, penetrating melon and green-capsicum flavours, racy, harmonious and long.
