Voyager Estate is a premium producer in Margaret River, Western Australia. The late mining magnate Michael Wright pursued several avenues of business and agriculture before setting his sights on owning a vineyard and winery. It was thus an easy decision when he was able to buy what was then called Freycinet Estate from founder and leading viticulturist Peter Gherardi in 1991. Peter had established the vineyard in '78, and it was significantly expanded by Michael over the ensuing years. Apart from the Cape Dutch- style tasting room and vast rose garden, the signpost for the estate is the massive Australian flag pole - after Parliament House in Canberra, the largest flag pole in Australia. Michael's daughter, Alexandra Burt, has been at the helm of Voyager Estate for many years, supported by general manager Chris Furtado and a long-serving and committed staff.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes, Steve James, Head of Viticulturew and Winemaking
"Nose: Floral, red & dark berries, gravel, earth, cedar. Palate: Concentrated & elegant with silky tannins. Food match: Marinated beef with mushrooms & pickled onions. — Old Block, as we affectionately call it, is one of our original 1978 plantings and has been organically farmed for many years. It produces the finest, most elegant tannins of all our vineyards, creating a perfect reflection of our region and its distinct personality.”
96/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, Campbell Mattinson (2015 vintage)
"Open-fermented before being sent to all-French oak, 50% new, for 18 months. Medium to full-bodied with blackcurrant, peppercorn, dark chocolate and smoky oak flavours swanning through the palate. There's a sizeable swell of tannin, but the fruit has set up the spinnaker and sails on regardless. It's quite a wine. It makes power and elegance look like the most natural of partners." 95/100 Huon Hooke (2013 vintage)
"Deep red/purple colour and a chocolate, vanilla and black fruit bouquet, which has a hint of the regional nori and peaty character. The wine is rich and full-bodied, deep and plush in fruit and tannin, with supple, ample tannins and good extract. Seriously good wine. (Vines planted 1978; 50% new & 50% two-year-old oak) 14 SEP 2017."
