A magnum of special Chardonnay -- a superb gift to others, or yourself! (comes in a wooden box) This is a totally unique New Zealand Chardonnay: top Te Awanga fruit is fermented in a weird new device, an egg-shaped concrete vat. This shape creates a plump, rounded Chardonnay due to extra contact with yeast lees. If that's too technical, it's just a gorgeously rich, aromatic and distinctive Chardy with hardly even a hint of oak – but oh so delicious. Packaged in a cool pine box. Supply very, very limited!

Its Origins

From the man at the helm of the Sacred Hill Wines. Tony has now started his own label and he will be producing only Chardonnay. The Chardonnay-only project is run with his wife Karryn and photographer friend Richard Brimer. The wine is clearly aimed at the 'old school' style of Chardonnay, exemplified best by his top Skeetfield label. But Tony's expertise allows the wines to remain elegant and refined, even while they are while big, bold and buttery. Experimentation in style and technique is meanwhile producing results in new styles such as his remakable Golden Egg Chardonnay. The Golden Egg is unique in New Zealand: an un-oaked wine made in a concrete egg, it is nonetheless rich and textured due to increased microcurrents in the juice creating more contact with yeast lees, as well as such a large surface for lees to attach to (the whole lower hemisphere).

What The Critics Say

18.5/20 Raymond Chan

"Brilliant straw-yellow colour with lemon-green hues and some depth, a little lighter edged. This has a very fresh and elegant nose with subtle aromas of white stonefruits along with an overlay of nutty and yeasty lees and soft, thirst-quenching mineral notes. The aromatics are well proportion with good depth and expressed with clarity. Medium-bodied, the plate is fresh and lively with gently rich and vibrant fruit flavours of white stonefruits entwined with nutty, yeasty lees, unfolding nuances of smoke, The flavours show precision and clarity, with slippery and mouthwatering, piquant acidity enlivening the mouthfeel. The wine flows easily along a very fine phenolic-threaded line, leading to a long finish with nutty and yeasty elements. This is a fresh, lively and subtly rich-fruited Chardonnay with yeasty and nutty detail on a slippery, fine-textured palate. Serve with seafood, poultry and pork over the next 4-5 years. 100% hand-picked Hawke’s Bay Mendoza clone fruit, with fermentation in two 1,600 L concrete eggs and two barriques, one new and one 2.y.o. with high solids, accounting for 12% of the total, the wine at 13.0% alc., all of the wine aged 11 months on lees with approx. 75% MLF conversion "

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

This is about texture, poise and impeccable harmony. Beautifully composed and elegantly expressed, this stylish chardonnay offers aromas of white stone fruit, rockmelon, nougat and hazelnut with nuances of oatmeal and lemon peel notes. The palate is concentrated and impressively weighted with rounded mouthfeel and creamy texture, brilliantly framed by seamlessly integrated acidity, finishing superbly long and expansive. A restrained beauty. At its best: 2018 to 2024
