Another really good year in 2016 -- the last of the charmed vintages -- makes this a Coleraine magnum to collect! Hawkes Bay's most iconic and age-worthy Cabernet-led wine, this is frequently rated with near perfect scores. A pristine and focussed expression of the Bordeaux style, Coleraine is beautiful young but made for cellaring -- i.e. made for the slow-aging magnum format. A stunning gift or a serious glass of wine, grab these before they're gone!

Its Origins

Originally a farm with homestead established in 1854 by John Chambers, it was his son Bernard who, on return from travels in France, planted vineyards on its north facing hills - which are still in use. In 1919 the Chambers sold and the Te Mata Vineyards company was established, to continue until 1975 when two associates, John Buck and Michael Morris, ended their 8 year search for a winery location by purchasing on the historic Te Mata estate. By remaining firmly rooted in a kind of modern traditional approach - quality focussed wines made with long-term expertise and from estate-only vineyards - Te Mata Estate have risen and risen as New Zealand’s benchmark for cellaring quality. Depending on variety, both their middle and top end wines are consistently capable not only of balance and appeal on release, but of aging for multiple decades.

What The Critics Say

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"Still a baby, this classy cabernet/merlot demands cellaring, as you would expect. The bouquet is fragrant and complex, the palate is vigorous ( revealing 'bright fruit' characters, says Peter Cowley ) with substantial body (13.5%), strong blackcurrant, plum, spice and nut flavours, firm, ripe tannins and a seamless, lasting finish. Best drinking 2023-plus. $140."

97/100 Bob Campbell (2015 vintage)

"A blend of cabernet sauvignon (54%), merlot (36%) and cabernet franc (10%) from estate-owned vineyards. Rich, concentrated and velvety red with blackcurrant, cassis, cedar, black olive, anise, liquorice and nutty oak flavours. An impressively layered wine with a lengthy finish. It can be appreciated now but has obvious potential. 14/11/2017."

19.5/20 Raymond Chan (2015 vintage)

"The fruit sweetness and richness is the immediate feature on the palate with concentrated and intense, layered flavours of blackberries and blackcurrants, cassis and black plums, along with herbs, floral elements and minerals, unfolding pencilly oak. This has an underlying vitality, freshness and power, carrying the plush fruit flavours to a very long, lingering, textural finish. This is a classically structured, ageworthy Cabernet blend with refined opulence.
