Originally a farm with homestead established in 1854 by John Chambers, it was his son Bernard who, on return from travels in France, planted vineyards on its north facing hills - which are still in use. In 1919 the Chambers sold and the Te Mata Vineyards company was established, to continue until 1975 when two associates, John Buck and Michael Morris, ended their 8 year search for a winery location by purchasing on the historic Te Mata estate. By remaining firmly rooted in a kind of modern traditional approach - quality focussed wines made with long-term expertise and from estate-only vineyards - Te Mata Estate have risen and risen as New Zealand’s benchmark for cellaring quality. Depending on variety, both their middle and top end wines are consistently capable not only of balance and appeal on release, but of aging for multiple decades.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2016 vintage
"Deep crimson, Bullnose ’16 weaves star anise, violets, black cherry and allspice across a core of ripe berry fruit and luxurious, velvet tannins. From Te Mata Estate’s 120th vintage, this is an enchanting, signature Bullnose. Expressive, darkly aromatic, and replete with fresh raspberry, boysenberry, and espresso, all leading to a finely textured finish."
96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2015 vintage)
"A gratifying syrah of considerable pedigree, this 2015 Bullnose has a powerful engine, yet it purrs quietly. Aromas of dark plum, blueberry, cocoa and black olive with toasted hazelnuts on the nose. The palate delivers plush texture and outstanding fruit weight, superbly supported by velvety texture and beautifully woven silky tannins. Instantly appealing, even though this is built for the long haul, the wine combines grace and power, as well as fruit purity and savoury complexity. At its best: 2019 to 2029. $49.00. www.temata.co.nz. March 2017."
19/20 Raymond Chan (2015 vintage)
"Brand spanking new – just released! Dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red, very youthful in appearance. The nose is elegant but intense and deeply concentrated with an array of perfumes. Dark-red berry fruits, with spicy layers and violet florals, then black earth and mineral detail at the core. Tightly structured and contained, but the sweet and rich black and red berry fruits come through with finesse and intensity. The structure is refined, the tannin extraction quite powdery, then the oak spices emerge and carry to the finish with dark florals. This is a concentrated, youthful, but text-book Bridge Pa Triangle expression at the top level. This has the track record as one of the country’s most consistent Syrahs. 19.0+/20 Oct 2016 RRP $54.00."
