A classic Syrah from old vines in the Northern Rhone. These 60 year old vines grow near Hermitage, the celebrated home of Syrah. The delicious result is a glimpse at this greatness -- a light-bodied but supple food wine packed with black fruits, spice and mineral inflections. Unfined and unfiltered yet beautifully focused, at $40 something this is lovely value.

Its Origins

Domaine Tardieu-Laurent was established in 1994. It is a partnership between Dominique Laurent, a former pattisier (and with the girth to go with it) and one of the hottest names in Burgundy, and Michel Tardieu, a dynamic young winemaker. Tardieu-Laurent is an extremely unusual operation in that they are a négociant only, buying young wines from growers all over the Rhône, which they mature and blend before bottling. They own no vineyards and don't buy grapes, only wine. Tardieu-Laurent is very much an "artisan" producer, making between half a dozen and 20 or so barrels of each wine. The majority of the wines are from the southern Rhône although superb cuvees of Cote Rôtie and Hermitage are also produced. The wines are all aged in small oak casks (often 100% new) and bottled with no fining nor filtration. Michel Tardieu proclaims himself as a confirmed terroirist, insisting that his aim with each appellation is to express powerfully the fruit and sense of place, never masking these factors with wood.

What The Critics Say

91-93/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds

"Brilliant purple. Vibrant, mineral-accented aromas of fresh blue fruits, olive and candied licorice, joined by a steadily building peppery nuance. Juicy, focused and gently sweet, offering intense boysenberry and spicecake flavors and a touch of allspice. The mineral note comes back strong on a very long, penetrating finish that leaves a sexy violet pastille note behind."

16.5/20 Jancis Robinson MW

"Mid purplish crimson. Not the intense colour of the south. Meaty and lifted. Very fragrant. Racy and round. Super supple with a little salty savour on the end. Really very impressive indeed. Not amazingly concentrated but beautifully balanced. 100% Syrah (60 years old). 66% destemmed. Terroir: Larnage, Battis, Gervans, slopes in Mercurol. Ageing: 12 months in new and one-year-old oak plus 6 months in foudre (Tronçais – Allier)." Drink 2018 - 2023
