A serious Syrah from the legendary Gimblett Gravels in Hawkes Bay. Deep and rich in style, the warm condition of 2016 allowed this wine to achieve a sense of both scale and elegance, with a fine-tuned palate of lush fruit and fine tannins and a bright, spicy aromatic deepened by inky cassis. Classy yet rich and complete, this wine offers real value straight from the Gravels. Don't wait for the excellent 2016 vintage to sell out!

Its Origins

Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"A gorgeous syrah offering power and elegance. The beautifully perfumed bouquet shows dark plum, blueberry compote, violet, cedar and cocoa characters, followed by a concentrated palate that is supple and silky. The wine displays excellent fruit purity, wonderfully enhanced by stylish oak infusion, finishing long, mouth-filling and refined. At its best: 2018 to 2024. $34.00. www.squawkingmagpie.co.nz. Dec 2017." Drink 2018 - 2024

5 Stars Raymond Chan

"Even, very dark, purple hued ruby-red colour, a tad lighter on the rim, and very youthful in appearance. The nose is gently packed with aromas of ripe dark raspberries with hints of blackberries, entwined with dark-red and violet florals, along with black and white pepper and spices. Medium-bodied, the palate has rich, sweet and juicy fruit flavours of dark raspberries and blackberries intermingling with aromatic red and violet florals, a subtle layering of black and white pepper with spice notes and nuances of iron-earth minerals. The palate has fine-grained tannin structure and balanced acidity supporting the fruit. The mouthfeel carries the juicy fruit to a soft-textured, dry, lingering finish. Match with Middle Eastern fare over the next 5-6+ years. 100% Syrah fruit from the Gimblett Gravels, hand-picked and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 15 months in 35% new oak. 18.5-/20 Dec 2017 RRP $33.95" Drink 2017 - 2023+

93/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2014 vintage)

"Ripe, varietal and very engaging core of red and black fruits with raspberry, black currant and sweet blueberry; a dense violet/floral layer and generous meaty quality. Dry, firm, full- bodied and rich in flavour. Dry with youthful and still integrating tannins alongside an backbone of acidity. Some peppery qualities and new oak frame this wine will age well also offering immediately drinkability wit the right food selection. Lengthy, varietal and engaging finish. Best from 2020 through 2030."
