Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.
What The Critics Say
90/100 Cameron Douglas MS
"Ripe, fruity and woody with a fresh and baked stone fruit bouquet, vanilla and baking spices, plenty of new wood scents and a toasty brazil nut complexity. On the palate – fruity and woody with cashew and brazil nut flavours, sweet yellow peach, red apple and a core of complex concentration; plenty of nervous youthful attributes with fresh acidity and fine wood tannins. Drink now and through 2026." Drink 2017 - 2026
Winemaker notes on current 2016 vintage
"A full bodied Chardonnay with a palate of ripe fruits and soft spices. Gentle oak ageing and malolatic fermentation adds lovely buttery and toasty flavours and a fine textural finish. A serious single vineyard wine."
4 Stars Raymond Chan (2015 vintage)
"Bright, light straw-yellow colour with lemon-green hues. The nose is fresh, bright and tightly bound with clear aromas of white and yellow stonefruits along with mouthwatering steely and minerally elements and nutty nuances at the core, unfolding lemon-curd MLF notes. Medium-bodied, the palate is crisp and refreshing with tightly bound flavours of white stonefruits entwined with nutty oak, lemon-curd MLF, and nuances of butterscotch and toast. The wine follows a fine-textured, dry phenolic line enlivened by thirst-quenching lacy acidity. The flavours show clarity and carry to a lingering finish of minerals and toast. This is a fresh and crisp Chardonnay with flavours of stonefruits, minerals, nuts and toast, underlined by lemon-curd MLF and fine, dry textures. Match with grilled seafood and poultry over the next 3+ years. A single vineyard wine, clones 15 and 95, fermented in tank to 14.0% alc., the wine aged in 1 and 2 y.o. oak. 17.0+/20 Mar 2016 RRP $19.95."
