After stints in various regions of New Zealand as well as Navarra, Spain, winemaker Andrew Fox had established the strong relationships in the Waipara region enabling him to beg, borrow and lease his way into founding his own label, Silver Wing. It is focused entirely on the varieties that showcase Waipara as perhaps New Zealand’ most exciting terroir - producing Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, all carefully sourced from closely managed local vineyards. Leveraging its outsider status and commitment to artisan values, a special focus of Silver Wing is natural and traditional winemaking, including hand-picking, indigenous yeast fermentation and good use of skin contact. Silver Wing are also one of the only local producers of a no-sulphites-added wine, the Nada Pinot Noir.

"A single vineyard wine, hand-picked fruit from 20 y.o. vines, 40% destemmed and given 4 hours skin contact, the remainder WBP, indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 12.5% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 15% new French oak, the wine undergoing batonnage and approx. 90% MLF. Bright, light golden-hued straw-yellow colour, This has an elegantly concentrated nose of white and yellow stonefruits melded with subtle flinty lees and reductive complexities, along with nutty detail and sweet, lifted oak and smoky notes. A little waxiness emerges in the glass. Medium-bodied, tightly bound and elegantly presented flavours of white stonefruits, nuts and waxy elements feature on the palate. This has a good core with a smooth-flowing, energetic line. The textures are fine and the mouthfeel lively from the bright acidity. The nutty and flinty flavours carry through to a long, lingering, concentrated finish. Serve with seafood and poultry over the next 3-4 years. 17.5-/20 Nov 2015 RRP $28.00."
