"The perfection of Gewurztraminer" was last year's phrase in Parker's Wine Advocate for this incredible Grand Cru wine. Lovingly made by the ridiculously hard-working Domaine Schoffit, it is wonderfully lush, rich and soft yet with deep vibrancy and tension as well as exceptional concentration. Schoffit literally work to hard in the vineyard to market their wines, so we are lucky to import this -- a total gem and supreme value for the price.

Its Origins

Bernard Schoffit is a brilliant pioneer in Alsace’s greatest Grand Cru, Rangen de Thann. The domaine, started by Bernard’s father Robert at 10 hectares, is situated near Colmar. 25 years ago, Bernard, then still very young, embarked on an ambitious program of buying land in Rangen, around the Clos St. Theobold. Totaling nearly 6.5 hectares, a good part of it had been abandoned because it was too steep to work. Through sheer determination and ambition, he has now reclaimed all 6.5 hectares. From these incredibly steep slopes, with incredibly low yields, he is making simply extraordinary wine from each plot he grows. Bernard’s gift for wine-making is not reserved only for his Rangen wines. In his vineyards near Colmar he practices the same rigorous approach to yields. These yields, very old vines, and Bernard’s guiding hand produce wines that are all marked by the following characteristics: intensity, very pure varietal character, great concentration of fruit and richness on the palate, and perfect acidity to balance and carry this weight into a long and brilliant finish. Organic.

What The Critics Say

16.5/20 Jancis Robinson

"Deep greenish gold. Heady, true floral, lychee nose with an attractive savoury streak. Crystal clear structure, some perceptible residual sugar that might put some people off but there is no shortage of acidity. Light bitterness on the finish. It would be interesting to find the perfect food match for this wine. Alexandre Schoffit and his father are busy reorienting all the trellising in Rangen so that they can farm it biodynamically (as they do their other holdings at Harth)." Drink 2018 - 2023

97/100 Parker's wine Advocate, Ian D'Agata (2015 vintage)

"Schoffit's citrus colored 2015 Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Rangen Clos Saint-Théobald opens with a noble perfume: bright, fragrant, complex and finessed, with a fascinating mix of floral, herbal, stony and fruity aromas that are all perfectly interwoven—nothing sticking out. This is sublime harmony and fine complexity! Full-bodied, round and piquant, with great elegance, finesse and vitality, this is a concentrated andwell-structured, yet beautifully balanced and persistent Rangen Gewurztraminer. It is full of tension and finishes with the greatest finesse and ethereal elegance I have probably ever experienced with this gorgeous grape variety. This 2015 Rangen might be the perfection of Gewurztraminer, and if not, it is at least a legendary wine that is sweet (59 grams per liter), but thanks to its vivacious acidity and perfect ripeness, in ambrosial balance. Or, with less adjectives and attributes: Buy as much of it as you can get! At $49, you can't hardly get a better wine anywhere on planet wine! If you knew where the grapes for this wine are cultivated and how much time it takes to tend the vines and harvest the grapes (not to mention the unique terroir itself or Zind-Humbrecht's twin from the Clos Saint-Urbain), you would know this wine should cost triple the price!

94/100 Wine Enthusiast (2015 vintage)

"Peach and honeysuckle already have a notion of honeyed sweetness and ripeness on the nose. The palate boosts both fruit and floral notion to the top, where honeysuckle and rose petal notes meeting with peach on the medium-sweet palate. This is full on, joyous, juicy and rich with expressive, exuberant flavor. An underlying concentration almost feeds this with a fiery dynamic force. The finish is medium sweet but comes with a wonderfully redeeming pure lemon streak. This is ready now but will get even better with age. Drink 2017–2037."
