Alsace is the home of Pinot Gris and this rich, weighty style shows why. Our own import, Schoffit's Gris is close to dry but packed with flavour: not only citrus, peach and pear but also floral and subtle earthy-mineral flavours, adding interest with food. It has all the richness and some of the sweetness of a NZ Gris, just more texture, harmony and subtle power. One to try for Europhiles or Kiwis wanting something more food-friendly or, just...more.

Pinot Gris

Its Origins

Bernard Schoffit is a brilliant pioneer in Alsace’s greatest Grand Cru, Rangen de Thann. The domaine, started by Bernard’s father Robert at 10 hectares, is situated near Colmar. 25 years ago, Bernard, then still very young, embarked on an ambitious program of buying land in Rangen, around the Clos St. Theobold. Totaling nearly 6.5 hectares, a good part of it had been abandoned because it was too steep to work. Through sheer determination and ambition, he has now reclaimed all 6.5 hectares. From these incredibly steep slopes, with incredibly low yields, he is making simply extraordinary wine from each plot he grows. Bernard’s gift for wine-making is not reserved only for his Rangen wines. In his vineyards near Colmar he practices the same rigorous approach to yields. These yields, very old vines, and Bernard’s guiding hand produce wines that are all marked by the following characteristics: intensity, very pure varietal character, great concentration of fruit and richness on the palate, and perfect acidity to balance and carry this weight into a long and brilliant finish. Organic.

What The Critics Say

91/100 Vinous, Ian D'Agata (2015 vintage)

"Vivid light yellow. Soil-driven nuances of smoke, butter and pastry dough complicate apple and pear on the nose and in the mouth. Broad and sweet, offering a suave mouthfeel plus a saline element that adds a sappy quality. Finishes with very good palate presence and grip. Actually tastes drier than the numbers might suggest. These Pinot Gris vines are 35 years old and grow on gravel-sandy soils of alluvial origin."

91/100 Wine Enthusiast (2015 vintage)

"The nose shows both earthy and fruit elements: something smoky and dark counters the bright ripe pear notes. Very pure pear fruit shimmers just beneath the surface. This is powerful and concentrated with textured and pleasantly bitter notions on the midpalate."

90/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Stehpan Reinhardt (2015 vintage)

"The citrus-colored 2015 Pinot Gris Lieu-Dit Harth Tradition opens with an intense and ripe fruit aroma that mixes pineapple and grapefruit flavors with yeasty notes. Full-bodied, round and elegant, this is a rather mellow and very juicy Pinot with smooth acidity but fine tannins. Bottled with 16 grams of residual sugar, this is a well-structured wine that needs some years find its form. -- Exporting 50% isn't that bad, but Bernard [Schoffit] is proud to point out, "We have never forgotten our local consumers." As a consequence, the prices pf Schoffit wines are still reasonable. Schoffit wines are unique in style, and great in quality and terroir expression." Drink 2022 - 2035
