One of New Zealand's top Cabernet blends, a highly awarded cellaring wine from the Hawkes Bay masters Sacred Hill. Deep Cabernet fruits have real poise here, getting proper ripeness from an excellent year while retaining much needed freshness and complexity. With the other varieties completing the blend, this is once again a superbly crafted, deeply harmonious claret from the masters at Sacred Hill. Drink now or cellar.

Its Origins

Back in 1986, David and Mark Mason, with friend and winemaker Tony Bish, began with a simple philosophy of making more wine than they could drink, and sharing the rest. They had the perfect place to make it happen, under the shade of Puketapu (sacred hill), along the white, volcanic cliffs and river land gravels of the Dartmoor Valley in Hawke’s Bay. They were precious days by the river with friends, family and food. Sacred Hill is recognised as one of New Zealand's leading, multi award winning wineries. Focusing on the production of premium 'handcrafted' varietal wines the company's estate vineyards are now located in New Zealand's leading grape growing regions of Marlborough, Hawke's Bay and Central Otago.

What The Critics Say

17/20 Jancis Robinson MW

"56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc. 17 months in French oak, 50% new. Sacred Hill rarely put Gimblett Gravels on the label, and the front label doesn't even cite the grape varieties. Mid garnet that's more shaded than most. Interesting, layered nose with great plumpness and the fruit almost covers the particularly fine tannins. Quite luscious with blueberries and richness – but no shortage of tannin. Good vivacity here." Drink 2019 - 2027

98/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2015 vintage)

"The gratifying bouquet shows blackcurrant, mixed berry compote, cigar box, black olive and cedar aromas, leading to a concentrated and meticulously expressed palate that is richly fruited with seductive savoury nuances. The wine is sophisticated and substantial, brilliantly structured by fine, chalky tannins. Powerful and perfectly proportioned, this is a compelling rendition. From the Gimblett Gravels district, 2015 Helmsman is a blend of 76% cabernet sauvignon, 19% merlot and 5% cabernet franc. $85.00. www.sacredhill.com. June 2017." Drink 2020 - 2032

94/100 Bob Campbell MW (2015 vintage)

"A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc from the Gimblett Gravels district of Hawke's Bay. Full-flavoured, peppery red with cedar, herb, blackberry, violet and spicy oak flavours. A dense, firmly-structured wine with obvious cellaring potential. 19 OCT 2017." Drink 2017 - 2023
