Back in 1986, David and Mark Mason, with friend and winemaker Tony Bish, began with a simple philosophy of making more wine than they could drink, and sharing the rest. They had the perfect place to make it happen, under the shade of Puketapu (sacred hill), along the white, volcanic cliffs and river land gravels of the Dartmoor Valley in Hawke’s Bay. They were precious days by the river with friends, family and food. Sacred Hill is recognised as one of New Zealand's leading, multi award winning wineries. Focusing on the production of premium 'handcrafted' varietal wines the company's estate vineyards are now located in New Zealand's leading grape growing regions of Marlborough, Hawke's Bay and Central Otago.
What The Critics Say
97/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Gloriously fruited and immensely complex, the wine shows sweet plum, mixed berry compote, smoked game, tar and cedar characters with a touch of pepper spice. It is superbly weighted and concentrated on the palate, displaying outstanding depth and expansive mouthfeel, wonderfully framed by plush tannins. Harmonious and symphonic with loads of engaging flavours. $60.00. www.sacredhill.com. Aug 2019." Drink 2021 - 2031
95/100 Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier
"Very dark ruby and purple core with a ruby rim. Aromas of dark berries and pepper spices, vanilla and sweet clove. Additional aromas of blue fruits and a hint of new leather, baking spices and violets. Dry, nice core of fruit, lots of energy and texture on the palate with chalky tannins and plenty of acidity. Flavours reflect the nose. Complex, steely and haunting finish. A wine destined to age well." Drink 2022 - 2030
19/20 Raymond Chan
"This has an elegantly presented nose with fine and tightly bound, penetrating aromas of ripe blackberry fruit infused with exotic Middle Eastern spices, unfolding violet florals, and integrated black pepper, dark herb and iron-earth elements. This is harmonious and beautifully integrated. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegant in presentation with a rich and sweetly luscious core of ripe blackberry fruit melded with a layer of exotic spices, unfolding violet floral and black pepper notes with iron-earth complexities. The fruit is supported by fine-grained tannin structure and the acidity lends vitality. The wine flows seamlessly to a long and sustained, nuanced finish. This will develop over the next 8-10 years. 100% Syrah, fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 16 months in 25% new French oak. 19.0/20 Nov 2018 RRP $59.99" Drink 2018 - 2028
