A stunning Syrah. Te Awanga Estate winemaker Rod McDonald's crafting of his globally lauded Trademark 2016 Syrah has seem him awarded a place in the inaugural Master Winemaker 100 list. The Trademark 2016 Syrah was one of only five syrahs, and the only one from New Zealand, to pick up a Syrah Master medal as part of the 2019 Global Masters Series which is steered by a major British wine publication The Wine Business. Master-of-Wine and editor-in-chief Patrick Schmitt said the Master Winemaker 100 list comprised "cellar-based personalities" who crafted wines great enough to for them to be classed as a "wine master" by those who are Masters of Wine. He said he was "blown away" for Te Awanga Estate to be listed alongside wineries like Chapoutier, Penfolds, Vasse Felix and Charles Heidsieck Champagne. "The Trademark Syrah is our flagship wine, only made in a good vintage from exceptional fruit and with limited bottles," McDonald said. The Trademark label is Rod McDonald's top expression of place and variety, and this Syrah from a great vintage is one of the finest examples you could imagine. Packed with immense pleasure as well as potential, this is a gorgeous red to drink now or lay down for a considerable time.

Its Origins

Rod McDonald earned his chops over thirteen years in Hawkes Bay, nine of them with Villa Maria’s Vidal’s Estate. On the back of winning New Zealand Winemaker of the Year in 2006 Rod went out on his own, consulting for other wineries and starting his own somewhat rambling portfolio of brands, most of which are gaining significant recognition in their respective categories. The ‘Te Awanga’ range is sourced from the ‘home’ vineyards, located at the cellar door site. ‘Quarter Acre’ is a step up into single vineyard wines exploring sub-regional terroir. ‘Two Gates’ offers organic but exceptionally elegant examples of Hawkes bay classics. The ‘One Off’ range is a one-size fits all for anything else Rod wants to make - many of which are so good that this ‘non-brand’ threatens to outshine the others. With beautiful wine styling as well as obvious advantages in sourcing quality juice, the confidence and swagger of Rod McDonald wines seems to be nothing if not justified.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Flagship wine from a sloping limestone hillside and an old riverside slope overlooking the TukiTuki River. Dense, yet quite supple and accessible red with a ripe plum, raspberry, floral, violet, pepper and spicy oak flavours. Can be appreciated now but shows obvious cellaring potential 07 NOV 2019." Drink 2019 - 2028

92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski

"The 2016 Syrah leavens hearty mulberry and boysenberry fruit with hints of cracked pepper and cedar. Like most Hawke's Bay Syrahs, it's not overly big, relying on spice and aromatics to make an impression. It's medium-bodied, with silky tannins that work to channel the interwoven flavors of fruit, spice and oak into a cohesive, lingering whole, with licorice notes carrying the finish. Ambitiously priced from the cellar door (NZ$109), buyers may consider drinking it anytime over the next decade." Drink 2020 - 2030
