A recent arrival for a winery with such illustrious history, Ridge has made the East Bench label as a single-site Zinfandel since 2006. Today it is one of only two Ridge Zins made entirely from this classically Californian variety. Bright, lush red and dark fruit is perfectly integrated with freshness and firm, ripe tannins. A serious expression of this delicious grape.

Its Origins

Ridge Vineyards makes wines that compete in terms of quality and desirability with Bordeaux First Growths and Grand Cru White Burgundies. Winemaker Paul Draper has crafted 43 vintages at Ridge and his practical, hands-off, “pre-industrial” approach to winemaking has resulted in an exceptional and highly sought-after range of wines. Although a vineyard was first planted near the top of Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains in 1885, it lay abandoned until four Stanford Research Institute engineers bought it in 1959. Ridge Vineyards was formed in 1962 and Paul Draper was appointed as winemaker in 1969. After stunning the world by their triumph in the 1976 Judgement of Paris tasting, Ridge Vineyards shot to fame and gained cult status almost overnight. Since then, Ridge has concentrated on producing fine Bordeaux blends and Chardonnays from Monte Bello's exalted terroir as well as renowned Zinfandels from the Lytton Springs and Geyserville vineyards in Sonoma County.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni (2015 vintage)

The 2016 Zinfandel East Bench is supported by bright acids that give the wine the tension and energy that are typical of Dry Creek. Primary sweet red and purplish berry fruit notes are pushed forward in this vibrant, beautifully delineated pure Zinfandel. Readers may want to cellar the 2016 for a few years, as it is tightly wound today, but all the elements are impeccably balanced. The East Bench abuts the Syrah block at Lytton Springs. Put simply: what a wine!

17/20 JancisRobinson.com, Jancis Robinson (2015 vintage)

"Bright mid crimson. Heady sweet and savoury nose with real vitality. On the palate it's clear this is claret-like Zin, not berry jam. This is a serious take on Zinfandel, as one would expect of this producer. You could drink it now if you insist but it's really more suitable for cellaring. One of the more youthful wines in this collection. Aged for 12 months in American oak (10% new)." Drink 2019 - 2025
