Malbec with a little Cabernet Franc
Roberto de la Mota, partner and winemaker at Mendel Wines is the son of Raul de la Mota – well known Argentine winemaker and pioneer of modern winemaking in Argentina as we have come to know it today. Roberto was born in a winery, and has worked in winemaking all his life. Revancha represents a new project of his, and a brand that he has created together with his son Rodrigo; a keen 19 year old who is studying agronomy. He will be the third generation in the family to be an agronomistenologist. The pair started this project together in 2009 with only one wine. The collection now totals three. The grapes are mostly from selected vineyards in the Uco valley in Mendoza – an area of high altitude with a very fresh climate, which, together with the Cabernet Franc used in the blends, gives the wine spiced and fresh notes. The labels utilise chess imagery, with the wines manifesting themselves through different pieces.
What The Critics Say
90/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Luis Gutierrez (2014 vintage)
"The 2014 Revancha Malbec contains around 4% Cabernet Franc and the grapes are sourced from Altamira in the Uco Valley. It fermented in 8,000-liter stainless steel tanks with selected yeasts. Half of the wine was transferred to French barriques for malolactic and one year aging, while the rest remained in tank. It combines aromas of violets and spice (pink pepper) with an herbal touch, quite elegant. The palate is juicy, with round tannins and a soft texture, approachable and easy to drink. 10,000 bottles produced."
16.5/20 JancisRobinson.com (2014 vintage)
"Some red fruit. Less oak than in the Mendel line. Intense oak sweetness with a touch of toasty spice. A slight dusty quality over the beautiful fresh dark fruit, so pure and lively and fresh and slips across the palate. Chewy but rounded texture and such pure dark fruit and great length and freshness. Pawn label. Includes 5% Cabernet Franc.(JH)
