A premium Syrah from one of the world's finest producers and most sought-after vineyards. La Landonne is on the darker, iron-rich soils of the Cote Brune. This wine offers the site's deep-toned fruits and savoury and mineral power but -- given Rostaing's preference for generous ripeness, not over-ripeness -- it retains a polish, poise and florality that is both beautiful and classical. This will only improve for two decades or so. Allocations are very limited -- collect now!

Its Origins

Legal academic, property dealer and vigneron, René Rostaing crafts some of the finest Côte Rôties on the market today. He has owned 2 hectares in the Côte Blonde and La Landone since the 1970s but fortune has blessed him through his inheritance of four hectares of superbly sited vineyards from his father in law Albert Dervieux and another 1.4 hectares of particularly old vines from his uncle Marius Gentaz. He now has 7.4 hectares which in Côte Rôtie terms is a significant holding. Rostaing is firmly in the modernist camp of Côte Rôtie producers, destemming the majority of his fruit and being one of the first producers to ferment using vinomatics (horizontal automatic vinifiers). However he dislikes the overt taste of new oak and uses a maximum of 15% in the maturation process. All the wines are bottled unfiltered.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski

"Subtle notes of baking spices frame hints of tea, olives and raspberries on the nose of the 2016 Cote Rotie la Landonne. A paragon of elegance, it's medium to full-bodied, but silky from start to lingering finish. It's a wine that's pretty much guaranteed to make even the steeliest curmudgeon smile, as it's so bright, ephemeral and luscious. It's not the rich, ripe wine the 2015 is, but it's suave, complex and long." Drink 2018 - 2035

94-96/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski

"Brilliant violet. Ripe black and blue fruit, cherry cola, olive and a pungent floral note on the deeply perfumed nose; a peppery element adds complexity. Plush blackberry, bitter cherry and spicecake flavors display excellent clarity and take a sweeter turn with air. The supple, extremely persistent finish shows superb detail, and pliant tannins fold quickly into the sappy, strikingly persistent dark fruit."

96/100 The Wine Cellar Insider

"Full bodied, floral, stony, fresh and intense, the cherries have a polish and purity, the tannins are ripe, the fruit is juicy and there is this meaty character that makes it way along with the fruits, giving this a fabulous character. Give it a decade or so in the cellar, as this is not going to be much fun in its youth." Drink 2020 - 2030
