30% Touriga Franca, 30% Touriga Nacional, 15% Tinta Roriz and 25% mixed varieties
In 1764 this bowl-shaped property nestled into the fold of the Upper Douro valley had been given the name Quinta de Roriz, and it has been producing wine ever since. Like most of the historical Douro estates, Roriz has always been known for its Porto but Roriz was one of the first producers to export its wines to Europe, thanks to particularly enterprising ownership. Starting in 1815, the estate was owned by a member of the van Zeller family until the estate was acquired last year by the Symington wine empire, currently the largest landowners in the Douro. Today, Quinta de Roriz is distributed under the Prats and Symnington or P + S banner.

"The Prazo de Roriz is characterized particularly by red fruit flavours — raspberries and cherries and the Quinta de Roriz terroir provides a distinctive minerality and appealing peppery spice. The Quinta da Perdiz vineyard also provides grapes for the Prazo de Roriz. The wine is made for drinking young, but with the potential for developing in bottle for several years."

"The 2016 Prazo de Roriz is a blend of 30% each of Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, 15% Tinta Roriz and 25% of various others, all aged for six months in neutral barrels. It comes in at 13.9% alcohol. When first seen at an earlier stage, this was lovely but not particularly surprising. It seems to have improved with a bit more bottle time. It has fleshed out now, showing a little more focus and pop on the finish as well. It is still approachable today, but perhaps it will be better in the spring of 2019. Of the Symington-related values this issue, including under their own name, this (by a small margin) would be my pick—the best intersection of quality and price. I won't guarantee it stays at peak for all of its useful life, but it is a very nice house pour now." Drink 2018 - 2026
