An elegant premium wine from the southern coast of Sicily, near Vittoria. While the cheaper red-labelled Cerasuolo is the standard regional wine, this Dorilli label is a special Cerasuolo di Vittoia Classico DOCG -- "Classico" meaning the best vineyards from a delimited subzone and also extra aging before release (12 month of which were in classy oak). The style's wonderful brightness and cherry-spice are retained but deepened here by a greater proportion of Nero D'Avola, while the bright acidity is brought to earth by nice ripe, grainy tannins. A top wine in a refined and quite cutting style, this will shine after a good decant before dinner, or a spell in the cellar.

Its Origins

"Diego Planeta, along with Giacomo Rallo of Donnfugata and Lucio Tasca d’Almerita, is one of the three founding fathers of the “Sicilian wine renaissance” sparked 10 to 15 years ago. Cousins Francesca, Santi and Alessio Planeta hold the reigns to the estate today and have developed one of the most innovative and modern wine entities in Italy (they are among the most “liked” wineries on Facebook). "It almost seems that the wine takes its ruby-purple colour from the red sand of these Nero d’Avola and Frappato vines. The aromas of ripe blackcherry with that of cardamom, vanilla and cinnamon.The tannin – mature, soft, rounded – dissolves in themouth thanks to the incredible sweetness of the fruit.The oriental spices combine with the complex flavours of smoked pancetta, cooked must, marjoram and prickly pear. Extraordinary with roast pork chops, well peppered. Its savoury complexity matches well with braised oily fish cooked in liquid, and can also match well with spicy fish cooked in an Asian style. To keep for 5-10 years."

"Deep ruby. Reticent aromas and flavors of red cherry, smoky plum, botanical herbs and tar. Slightly folded in on itself presently, with an acidic spine and currently tough tannins still showing strong. I’d cellar this for a couple of years to let it show all it has to offer. A blend of 70% Nero d’Avola and 30% Frappato, and only 13% alcohol."

"The 2014 Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico Dorilli is a beautifully balanced and graceful wine that proudly veers to the most elegant and feminine side of the Sicilian winemaking scale. The bouquet is generous and intact with bright aromas of wild strawberry, cassis, forest bramble and blue violet. The results are tonic clean and bursting with good energy and verve. You do get those characteristic flavors of Sicily, like black olive and caper, that show up often in the island wines. The blend is 70% Nero d'Avola and 30% Frappato. Some 16,000 bottles are produced."
