This wine put Waipara Pinot Noir on the map. Succulent dark berries with savoury herbs and spice offer a benchmark expression of Kiwi Pinot, while fine acid and tannins make for an approachable but long-lived balance. A classic, this wine is never short of excellent. Age or drink now.

Overview

Grape

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albiet sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.

What The Critics Say

92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski

"Made with 40% whole clusters, the 2016 Pinot Noir looks to be the finest regular Peg Bay Pinot in some time. Its spicy, stemmy, sappy notes are balanced by bright, fresh black cherry fruit. It's medium-bodied, with a silky feel and a lingering finish that echoes with attractive tea-like nuances." Drink 2018 - 2022

95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2015 vintage)

"Intense, youthful pinot noir with floral, violet, plum, cherry, cocoa powder, spice and anise flavours. Dense yet elegant wine with power and a lingering finish. The wine really opened up in the glass and deserves to be aerated before serving. Good cellaring potential. 21/5/2018." Drink 2018 - 2024

19+/20 and 5 Stars Raymond Chan (2015 vintage)

"Dark ruby-red colour with a deep heart, a little lighter on the edge with slight purple hues. The bouquet is full and redolent of fragrant dark-red cherry and berry fruit entwined savoury notes of black plums and lifted dark herbs, unfolding dark-red floral elements. The aromatics form a deep heart with plenty of aromatic presence. Medium-full bodied, the palate has an elegant and harmoniously interwoven, rich and sweet-fruited heart with flavours of dark-red berry fruit with subtle notes of savoury plums, dark herbs and fragrant florals. The mouthfeel is bright and vibrant and the succulent fruit is supported by fine-grained tannin extraction with balanced acidity. The fruit vitality carries the wine to a long and sustained, sweet finish. Match with poultry and pork, lamb, beef and venison over the next 6+ years. Fruit from mainly ungrafted vines over 30 y.o., indigenous yeast fermented with approx. 25% whole clusters and as many whole berries as possible to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 22 months in 40% new French oak barriques. 19.0+/20 May 2018 RRP $51.00."
