Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Bob Campbell
"Intense, rich and weighty chardonnay with peach, biscuit, hazelnut, struck flint and oak flavours. A generously proportioned wine that's deliciously drinkable now but should develop well. 7/2/2019." Drink 2019 - 2023
95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"This is impressively complex on the nose showing grilled stone fruit, hazelnut, gun smoke, lemon peel and vanilla characters, leading to a sumptuous palate that is concentrated and weighty. The wine offers terrific fruit power as well as engaging savoury nuances, finishing gloriously long and gratifying. $60.00. www.pegasusbay.com. Feb 2019." Drink 2019 - 2024
92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski
"A four-puncheon selection, the 2016 Virtuoso Chardonnay ratchets up the intensity from the regular Chardonnay. Hints of struck match and toasted hazelnut join notes of pencil shavings and grilled stone fruit. It's medium to full-bodied but with extra levels of silkiness and length, with elegant citrus notes lingering for minutes." Drink 2018 - 2022
