A serious Bordeux blend from Pegasus Bay. Only produced in the best years, the Maestro represents the pinnacle for a slightly lesser known (and under-valued) category in Waipara red wine. Lashings of ripe fruit with real depth are held together by beautifully ageworthy and food freindly tannins. Decant this rare beauty now, or give it pride place in your cellar.

Its Origins

Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.

What The Critics Say

95/100 and rated "Excellent" by Cameron Douglas MS

"Powerful bouquet, smoky, intense, a core of fruit with black currant then blackberry and plum, crushed clove, twigs and earth. There’s an abstract package of aromas too with a touch of soy and boot polish. On the palate, full-bodied and equally intense - smoky, almost charry with a treacle-like fruit & oak sweetness. Flavours of blackcurrant and blackberry at the core of the wine are contrasted by bold tannins and medium acidity extending the length and finish. A delicious meaty wine with muscle, power, flavour and finish. Love it! Best drinking from today through 2026+." Drink 2020 - 2026+

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"It's superbly fruited and hugely appealing, showing blackcurrant, mulberry, cured meat and vanillin oak characters with a hint of tobacco complexity. It's wonderfully concentrated and richly expressed on the palate, offering terrific fruit power combined with refined mouthfeel, finishing persistent and delectably enticing. A blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and malbec. At its best: now to 2030. $52.00. www.pegasusbay.com. Sept 2020." Drink 2020 - 2030

92/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Generously-proportioned red with dark berry, Black Doris plum, liquorice, cassis, anise and nutty oak flavours. A complex Christmas cake style - rich and warming but with a thread of vibrant acidity. Should develop well in bottle. 05 JUL 2020." Drink 2020 - 2026
