Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.
What The Critics Say
5 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 vintage)
"Late-harvested at Waipara, in North Canterbury, from mature vines and made with 'a good portion' of noble rot, the 2015 vintage (5* ) is full of personality. Bright, light yellow/green, with a slightly honeyed bouquet, it is full-bodied (13.4 per cent alcohol) and fleshy, with highly concentrated, ripe flavours, a hint of marmalade, gentle sweetness (7.5 grams/litre of residual sugar) and loads of current-drinking appeal." Drink 2017 - 2021
93/100 Bob Campbell MW (2015 vintage)
"Dry, flavoursome riesling with honey, toast, lime, ginger and floral flavours. Quite a weighty example, with a drying backbone of phenolics and gentle acidity. A rich and complex wine that should develop well." Drink 2017 - 2022
18.5+/20 Raymond Chan (2015 vintage)
"The nose is elegant in proportion with rich and concentrated, well-packed aromas of ripe citrus fruits along with honey, marmalade and musk, unfolding exotic floral elements. Dryish to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate has a concentrated, dense heart packed with harmoniously integrated flavours of ripe citrus fruits, marmalade, honeysuckle and musk. This has real body and presence, and the palate has a rounded and gently unctuous mouthfeel. The acidity is ripe and soft, providing underlying energy and drive, and the wine carries to a long, lingering finish of honey, citrus fruits and musk. Match with Asian and Middle Eastern fare over the next 4+ years. Hand-picked bunches with at least 30% noble botrytis, cool-fermented in tank to 13.6% alc. and 7.2 g/L RS, TA 6.3 g/L. 18.5+/20 Sep 2017 RRP $35.00." Drink 2017 - 2022
