Everything beautiful about Pinot Noir is captured in the top wine from Neudorf. Effortlessly on show are floral, herbal, savoury and mineral touches, with fruit that has its own richness and depth but which plays an almost a supporting role to the food-friendly elegance. One of the world's most appealing bottles of Pinot Noir. This wine sells out -- buy!

Its Origins

Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere. The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Cameron Douglas

"Fabulous bouquet of PInot Noir with a seductive mix of flowers, spice and red fruit perfumes, neither one dominating over the other. The oak signature is noticeable yet quite reserved. Overall elegant and seductive. On the palate - dry, youthfully firm with plenty of acidity and vibrant tannin action. Flavours of red fruits and flower stay strong and the oak ever present, but not invasive. A lovely example still developing and will reward those who elect to cellar the wine for a while longer. Decant for service." Drink 2022 - 2030

17/20 Jancis Robinson

"Pale garnet fading to ruby and a transparent rim. The nose is really quite intense and sweet, and then the palate is beautifully lifted, refreshing and transparent. Great poise. Lovely stuff! Already drinking well. Not heavy enough to stand up to hearty, very meaty foods but this would be great with fish."

93/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Attractively-scented pinot noir with a mix of fruit (plum, cherry and dark berry), savoury (fresh herb) and floral (violet) flavours. An elegant, tightly-structured wine with a backbone of fine, drying tannins that should promote good cellaring potential 06 OCT 2018." Drink 2018 - 2025
