2016 Muga Torre Muga Rioja

One of the first 'new wave' Riojas, this is a deep and sensuous red. High traditional standards and the best modern winemaking seem to milk everything out of Rioja's amazing climate and old vine fruit. Magnificently polished, it is mouth filling without sacrificing huge density and aging potential. Decant for a good while or lay it down as long as you like, as this is the real deal. Demand is climbing and stocks are low. Collect!

Its Origins

Bodega Muga was founded in Haro in 1932 and is still in family ownership; the company farms 250 hectares in La Rioja Alta and in addition has long-standing contracts with the owners of another 150 hectares. Located in the foothills of the Montes Obarenses, the five principal vineyards (El Estepal, La Loma, Blatracones, La Loma Alta, and Sajazarra) share clay and limestone soils, each with its own unique microclimate, informed by the happy coincidence of continental, Mediterranean and Atlantic influences. The extended Muga family controls all aspects of the production and advocates the complexity afforded by the entire canon of grapes, that is to say Tempranillo, of course for the red, but also Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano in addition to Viura and Malvasia for the whites.

What The Critics Say

99/100 Jeb Dunnuck

"Even better than the magical 2015, the 2016 Torre Muga offers a thrilling bouquet of cassis and assorted pure dark fruits, lead pencil, graphite, white flowers, and spice-laced aromas and flavors. While this cuvée is always thought of as the most modern in the lineup, it's far from it and has integrated oak, flawless balance, sweet tannins, and a gorgeous finish. It's beautifully done and just a thrilling bottle of Rioja that's going to evolve for 20-30 years or more."

98/100 James Suckling

"The purity of fruit to this is very, very intriguing with blackberries, graphite, and charcoal. Full-bodied. It radiates intense fruit with perfectly polished tannins. Subtle asphalt and blue fruit. Very long and beautiful. Racy. Tempranillo with graciano and mazuelo. Needs two to four years of bottle age. Try after 2021."

97/100 Tim Atkin MW

"Torre Muga is the most "international" in style of the bodega's reds - controversially so when it was first released in 1991 - and is a cuvée of Tempranillo with 20% Mazuelo and Graciano, aged in 100% new French wood. Using fruit from the "magic triangle" between Villalba, Haro and Labastida, it's plush, aromatic and finely judged with subtle wood, violet top notes, sculpted tannins and the depth and concentration to age."
