Seriously good Central Otago Riesling, this medium-sweet offering from Mt Difficulty is full of steely, sweet and sour charm. Limey citrus and apple notes dominate, with an alpine-feeling zingy palate of fresh mineral acidity that is long and finishes fresh and clean. Seriously stylish and light-bodied, this is a perfect aperitif style from this top producer and region. Try this!

Overview

Grape

Riesling

Its Origins

It all began in the early 1990's, when the owners of five newly-planted vineyards in Bannockburn shook hands and decided to work together to produce wine under one label, Mt Difficulty. As a result, Mt Difficulty now owns some of the oldest vineyards in the Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago in New Zealand's rugged South Island. The Mt Difficulty brand started in 1998 with a very small production of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, made by Grant Taylor of Gibbston Valley Wines (now of Valli Wines). Prior to this the gang sold their grapes to either Gibbston Valley or Chard Farm. The Air New Zealand wine awards in 1999 put Mt Difficulty on the map, with the 1998 Pinot Noir winning a gold medal and the Chardonnay, silver.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Taut, vibrant riesling with chalk, mineral, lime, grapefruit, citrus and wildflower flavours. Laser-like acidity reacts with subtle sweetness to give the wine an exquisite tension. Wonderful purity and a lingering finish. This is a fine example of a consistently top riesling 15/1/2018." Drink 2018 - 2024

4.5 Stars Michael Cooper

"From Central Otago, the 2016 vintage (4.5*) is an instantly appealing, medium-sweet style (43 grams/litre of residual sugar). Bright, light lemon/green, it is medium-bodied and vibrant, with rich, ripe, peachy, limey flavours, hints of passionfruit, marmalade and honey, and a lovely balance of sweetness and appetising acidity."
