Pinot Noir

Its Origins

It all began in the early 1990's, when the owners of five newly-planted vineyards in Bannockburn shook hands and decided to work together to produce wine under one label, Mt Difficulty. As a result, Mt Difficulty now owns some of the oldest vineyards in the Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago in New Zealand's rugged South Island. The Mt Difficulty brand started in 1998 with a very small production of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, made by Grant Taylor of Gibbston Valley Wines (now of Valli Wines). Prior to this the gang sold their grapes to either Gibbston Valley or Chard Farm. The Air New Zealand wine awards in 1999 put Mt Difficulty on the map, with the 1998 Pinot Noir winning a gold medal and the Chardonnay, silver.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2016 vintage

"As our vineyards are ageing we are starting to see additional complexity emerging each vintage, 2016 produced a Pinot Noir focussed on earthy savouriness; mocha notes, and sweet brown spice elements overlaid earthy dark cherry. The wine displays line length and structural integrity. Savoury dark cherry notes alongside violet florals introduce the wine, this move into a linear elegant mid palate, out of which rise fine elegant textural tannins. Cherry notes frame the finish."

92/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Soft, supple and delicately fruity pinot noir with dark cherry, anise, spice, thyme and smoky oak flavours. Fresh acidity adds energy to this satisfyingly dry wine that's approachable now but should develop in the medium-term."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 vintage)

"This popular red is grown at Bannockburn, in the Cromwell Basin. Matured for a year in French oak casks (30 per cent new). The 2015 vintage (5*) is instantly appealing. Fragrant, mouthfilling and sweet-fruited, it is bright ruby, with rich cherry, plum and spice flavours, nutty, savoury notes adding complexity, good tannin support, and lovely balance and depth. Drink now or cellar."
