Mount Edward is a small winery located in the heart of the Gibbston grape growing district, 25 km from Queenstown, in Central Otago, New Zealand. Founded in 1997, the winery was started by one of the pioneers of Central Otago wine, Alan Brady. Originally started as a small personal project Mount Edward has evolved from its humble beginnings as a stand alone Pinot Noir and Riesling producer. Today the winery has vineyards in the best sub regions of Central Otago, producing wines across a number of varieties and styles. Since 2004, winemaker Duncan Forsyth and proprietor John Buchanan, have focused Mount Edward on growing small batch premium single vineyard wines that reflect site and season. As part of this, all estate vineyards, and the winery itself, are certified organically.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2016 vintage
"Perfumed with lovely aromatics, there is a range of complexed fruit notes of darker berryfruit, some spice, savoury tones and dried herbs. The 2016 has a silky and lush texture fruit power yet finely balanced with fine tannins throughout and long in flavour. An elegant vintage for us and for people who prefer the classics over the blockbuster. That said we had enough warm days to give a definitely a more plush and softness than the preceding few years. No filtration or fining, deposits may form. Organically grown, made and certified."
94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2015 vintage)
"Beautifully complex and fragrant, the bouquet shows dark cherry, clove, dried herb, floral and toasted almond characters. It is wonderfully weighted on the palate, delivering attractive fruit intensity together with rich savoury nuances, brilliantly supported by fine tannins. The wine is stylish and delectable, and offers fabulous drinking. At its best: now to 2023. $45.00. www.mountedward.com. Sept 2017."
93/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski (2015 vintage)
"Slightly darker fruited and more concentrated than the 2016 TED, the 2015 Pinot Noir remains a medium-bodied offering, redolent of rose petals, black cherries and spice. Only 15% new oak was used, so it remains in the background, letting the fruit shine and leaving the fruit tannins to carry the structure. They spread out across the palate, fanning out on the finish to leave behind a gentle coating of silky dryness."
