2020 Millton Riverpoint Gisborne Viognier

92 Points Richard Caro

Millton are so good they can master grapes that struggle in warm Gisborne, like Riesling, so how much better with a Gisborne classic like Viognier? Beautifully ripeness brings pear and sappy stonefruit, broad and soft with delicately honeyed and herbal harmonies. From fully biodynamic viticulture, a small portion of the ferment is held on skins for some months to add texture and depth. Wonderfully varietal yet with unique X factor, this is a Millton classic for a reason.

Its Origins

Vegan-friendly. The first biodynamic estate in New Zealand (and the first in the Southern Hemisphere to gain Demeter certification), James and Annie Millton have been growing wine in Manutuke on the banks of the Te Arai river in Gisborne since 1984. Farmed from inception in this manner, it was built on the backbone of family winegrowing in the area, with both James and Annie's parents having vines in what is now known as "Opou" and "Riverpoint". The Clos de Ste. Anne is a single vineyard situated on steep north-facing slopes in the foothills of Poverty Bay. The grapes are all hand harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts present in the vineyard. The estate is mostly known for their Chenin Blanc - a benchmark for the country - but they also grow wonderful Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Viognier, Gewurztraminer and Riesling.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2020 vintage

"A haunting wine with bristling delicacy, buoyed by a noted mineral edge. Poached pear and warm croissant give a spiced and sappy appeal. The salinity sings the proximity of the vineyard to its maritime environment. We consider the aromatic delight of Viognier will enhance and partner foods high in Umami flavours. Drink now through to 2026 with happiness."

94/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2018 vintage)

"Classic aromas of Viognier with wild flowers steeped in apricot flesh, peach and apple tea, fragrant spices and mild crumbly white soil minerality. There’s energy and spice with a noticeable heartbeat and personality. On the palate - dry, classic, floral and spicy, a core of apricot, apple and peach fruit flavours, flowers and mineral. Mild acid line with a pulsating energy, lengthy, balanced, well made and ready. Drink now and through 2022."
