A harmonious and satisfying organic Chardonnay from Gisborne. This is an icon wine from the world-leading biodynamic winemaker, James Millton. All the sappy, creamy richness of the Gisborne Chardie style is here, but so is a delicious gentleness and slightly lighter body, creating a wine that is complete and fulfilling but also has a nice gentle flow and delicate layering. It "has a good heart", as Raymond Chan puts it, and should satisfy any Chardie or organic wine lover.

Its Origins

The first biodynamic estate in New Zealand (and the first in the Southern Hemisphere to gain Demeter certification), James and Annie Millton have been growing wine in Manutuke on the banks of the Te Arai river in Gisborne since 1984. Farmed from inception in this manner, it was built on the backbone of family winegrowing in the area, with both James and Annie's parents having vines in what is now known as "Opou" and "Riverpoint". The Clos de Ste. Anne is a single vineyard situated on steep north-facing slopes in the foothills of Poverty Bay. The grapes are all hand harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts present in the vineyard. The estate is mostly known for their Chenin Blanc - a benchmark for the country - but they also grow wonderful Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Viognier, Gewurztraminer and Riesling.

What The Critics Say

18.5/20 Raymond Chan

"The nose is full with a complex amalgam of yellow stonefruits melded with creamy barrel-ferment and nutty oak, mealy complexities and flinty detail, unveiling suggestions of toast. The aromatics are well-concentrated with good depth. Medium-bodied, the palate has gently building flavours of yellow stonefruits, creamy and nutty oak, and mealy and flinty complexities. Hints of lemon curd MLF add to the interest. The palate has a good heart with depth and soft concentration, and a subtly-textured line with balanced acidity. The flavours unfold the fill the palate, and the wine carries positively to a soft, full, lingering finish. Match with poultry and pork dishes over the next 4-5 years. Mendoza clone fruit, hand-picked and indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 12.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 17% French oak., undergoing partial MLF. Certified BioGro organic and Demeter biodynamic. 18.5/20 Nov 2017 RRP $32.00." Drink 2017 - 2023

Winemaker notes on current 206 vintage

"There is an immediate eye appeal which is shining and the floral aromas of orange and white blossom together with honeyed notes and nutty acorns which lead into a clean fresh yet soft complexity. It smells like yellow and tastes like the words from AA Milne. With time in the glass the taste progresses towards a long and rounded mouth texture clipped with cleansing acidity and framed by silken tannins. It is soft and appealing and the mouth flavours have not been altered with any additional fining from animal products so it is an honest expression from our place to your face. Enjoy. Unfined. Contains no animal products."

4.5 Stars Michael Cooper (2015 vintage)

"The impressive 2015 vintage (4.5*) was fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels (15 per cent new), and oak-aged for 15 months. Pale straw, it has a fragrant, complex bouquet. Mouthfilling, it is rich, sweet-fruited, peachy and biscuity, with a slightly oily texture and excellent depth and harmony."
