En Primeur product: order now for arrival mid 2019. Called the "best vintage of Meyney ever produced", this is a classic St Estephe and exceptional value for the price. Rather like a top estate wine it is sourced from the property's own single block – in which a relatively high proportion of Petit Verdot can provide an extra complexity of musk and leather with age. Thanks to ambitious investment and ownership, this wine benefits from up to date equipment such as optical grape sorting under the expert eye of winemaking consultant Hubert de Bouärd. Very ripe, dark-fruited and deep, this is a succulent and serious Cabernet-led Bordeaux to decant on arrival or age further in cellar. To remove foreign exchange risk for our customers, listed prices are all up final landed cost including GST. Payment is due on invoice/order placement, with delivery in mid 2019.

Overview

Grape

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 15% Petit Verdot

Its Origins

The 51 hectare Left Bank, Bordeaux vineyard of Chateau Meyney is one large, single plot, which is unusual for such a big vineyard. Situated close to Chateau Montrose and not far from Chateau Phelan Segur, the gravel and sand based terroir of Chateau Meyney has a large streak of blue clay close to three meters thick, that resides underneath the gravel and sand, top soil. The vineyard of Chateau Meyney is planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. Those vines represent a change in the Chateau Meyney vineyard. Previously, there was some Cabernet Franc planted in their Medoc vineyard. Those vines were removed and more Merlot was added to the vineyard in its place. The vineyard is planted to a vine density of 9,000 vines per hectare. The vines are on between 35 and 40 years old. However, they old vines that are close to 100 years of age. To produce the wine of Chateau Meyney, vinification takes place in traditional, temperature controlled, cement vats that vary in size. Malolactic fermentation takes place in vat. The wine is aged in 60% new, French oak barrels for between 18 and 24 months

What The Critics Say

90-93/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Meyney is powerful and absolutely delicious. Black fruit, torrefaction, smoke, licorice and bittersweet chocolate flavors are dark and boldly sketched. Beams of firm tannin add to the wine's imposing, brooding personality. All the elements fall into place effortlessly in this ample, broad Saint-Estèphe."

93/100 Wine Cellar Insider, Jeff Leve

"Almost opaque in color, this is a beauty! The wine is rich, concentrated and has depth of flavor with length. The fruit is unadulterated purity and unreal deliciousness; the finishes builds into a sensory experience of taste and feel. This is the best vintage of Meyney ever produced."

90-92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Neal Martin

"The 2016 Meyney has quite an opulent and flamboyant bouquet, which is something I do not expect from this Saint Estèphe. It seems to calm down in the glass and attains more delineation and poise. The palate is sweet on the entry with impressive precision, quite linear in style with blackberry, graphite and smoky notes, leading to a finish that offers satisfying persistence. Excellent."
