32% Cabernet Franc, 29% Merlot, 16% Petit Verdot, 12% Malbec and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon
First planted in 1993, at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, Man O’ War consists of 150 acres of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks, each with a distinct soil profile and microclimate.
Every single block bears the footprints, and sometimes the names, of those who transformed Man O’ War’s rugged hillsides into a spectacular patchwork of vines. Helmed by winemaker Duncan McTavish and vineyard manager Matt Allen, the wines represent a legacy of preservation and great respect for the land and its history.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2016 vintage
"Lifted aromas of fresh blueberry, crushed stone, brown spice and clove lead into a rich and succulent palate framed with a core of fine tannin and a long lingering finish. 2016 Ironclad is a classic Cabernet franc and Merlot dominant blend, totally appealing in its youth but developing more savoury notes with time and always rewarding careful cellaring."
95/100 James Suckling (2015 vintage)
"A majestic wine that has savoury, earthy, terra-cotta aromas with spiced dark berries, sweet-woody notes, mushrooms and poached blood plums. The palate has a rich and attractive feel with fresh, ripe and plush flavours that carry a wealth of rich dark and ripe berries and a vibrant hold on the finish. A blend of cabernet franc, petit Verdot, merlot, Malbec and cabernet sauvignon. Drink now. 14 Aug, 2019 "
96/100 Bob Campbell MW (2014 vintage)
"A flavoursome blend of cabernet franc, merlot, petit verdot, cabernet sauvignon and malbec from an excellent vintage. Rich, mellow red, with emerging bottle age adding extra interest to a medley of ripe berry fruits, mixed spice and a suggestion of floral character. A satisfyingly complex wine that promises to age well." Drink 2019 to 2024
