Leeuwin Estate is one of the founding wineries of the now famous Margaret River district. In 1972, legendary Napa Valley winemaker, Robert Mondavi, first identified the future site of the Leeuwin vineyard as being ideal for the production of premium wine and provided early mentorship to Denis and Tricia Horgan who founded Leeuwin Estate in 1974. The initial vineyards were planted by hand over a five year period from 1975. Featuring state-of-the art facilities, the winery building was opened in 1978, celebrating with a trial vintage. Leeuwin enjoyed its first commercial vintage in 1979, and was thrust into the international spotlight when Decanter Magazine gave its highest recommendation to the 1980 "Art Series" Chardonnay in an international blind tasting.
What The Critics Say
99/100 The West Australian, Ray Jordan
"Leeuwin Estate is about to release what I believe is Australia’s greatest white wine, and the first I have given a score of 99- plus....It’s a game changer. And it’s given me a problem. You see, I gave the 2015 chardonnay 99 points, my highest score for an Australian white wine on release. But the problem now is that the 2016 is a better wine. I don’t believe any wine has achieved perfection, but this one pushes it mighty close. So all I can do is give it 99-plus."
96/100 Huon Hooke (2015 vintage)
"Light to medium, bright yellow colour, very young for its age. The bouquet is shy but pleasantly nutty, showing some oak; the palate has bracing acidity and concentrated flavour, which is still latent and promising more in time. There's a slight dip in the mid-palate. The wine is still remarkably young and has a great career in front of it. 18 MAY 2018" Drink by 2019 - 2030
Matthew Jukes 100 Best Australian Wines, 2018 (2015 vintage)
"Balance is born - my favourite wine mantra, and 2015 is exquisitely balanced from birth. '15 Art Series is a rare wine that shows immense presence and a flirtatious edge to its character..."
