Lamont is the brand of Craig and Angela Gasson, Craig a viticulturist who established 12.15 ha of vineyards with the McLachlan family in Bendigo, who planted in 1999 as one of the founders in the district. Working on-site and becoming intimate with the vines and land up to 2007, Craig and Angela took sabbatical overseas, gaining additional experience in the U.K. and the exciting Okanagan district of Canada, to return to Lamont to continue their work making the Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir wines even more expressive of their provenance. The Lamont wines are single-vineyard sourced, from a 4.5 ha block off Loop Road, organic since 2009 and now with BioGro certification. The site has the varieties matched specifically to particular soil profiles, and the viticulture is precision-managed to account for their requirements. Craig is personally responsible for the winemaking, and still involved in the viticulture.
What The Critics Say
96/100 Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier
"Warm and generous bouquet of Pinot Noir with a savoury-dried herb, textured oak aromas with a focused youthful tension ; then dark red berries and cherry fruit. Dry, tense , youthful and fruity. No mistaking the layer of oak with tannins to match. Plenty of acidity adding additional tension with the fruit punching through adding to a lengthy finish. A lovely wine with decanting needed for service or even better some cellar time."
91/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Ripe, cherry, berry, cassis and plum flavours with a subtle seasoning of toasty oak. Elegant, supple pinot noir that's relatively simple in its present youthful state, but has the potential to gain complexity with bottle age. 23/7/2018." Drink 2018 - 2023
18+/20 Raymond Chan
"The nose is fresh with good depth and firm aromas of ripe, dark-red and black cherry fruit along with an amalgam of fresh and dark herbs, liquorice and a suggestion of complexing whole bunch stalk notes, unfolding dark-red florals. Medium-full bodied, the palate is fulsome with mouthfilling flavours of ripe black cherry fruit harmoniously entwined with dark herbs, liquorice and earth elements. The fruit forms a firm line with grainy tannin extraction providing plenty of structure. The wine flows with good energy from the fresh acidity, and the wine carries to an elegant, sustained finish. Match with lamb, beef and venison over the next 6-8 years. Hand-picked fruit, clones 667, 777. Abel and 115, from Bendigo, fermented with a portion of whole bunches to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 25% new French oak barriques. Certified organic fruit. 450 cases made. 18.0+/20 Jul 2018 RRP $45.00." Drink 2018 - 2026
