A beautifully dry and refreshing Pinot Gris from a classy Central Otago producer. Winemaker Craig Gasson has a seriously deft touch, and this stylish Pinot Gris is a classy example. The harmonious nose and palate offers perfect fruit definition and fine aromatics -- with nice body and presence -- while remaining mineral and dry througout. A delicious example of what's best about Central Pinot Gris, the Lamont is serious quality and value.

Pinot Gris

Its Origins

Lamont is the brand of Craig and Angela Gasson, Craig a viticulturist who established 12.15 ha of vineyards with the McLachlan family in Bendigo, who planted in 1999 as one of the founders in the district. Working on-site and becoming intimate with the vines and land up to 2007, Craig and Angela took sabbatical overseas, gaining additional experience in the U.K. and the exciting Okanagan district of Canada, to return to Lamont to continue their work making the Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir wines even more expressive of their provenance. The Lamont wines are single-vineyard sourced, from a 4.5 ha block off Loop Road, organic since 2009 and now with BioGro certification. The site has the varieties matched specifically to particular soil profiles, and the viticulture is precision-managed to account for their requirements. Craig is personally responsible for the winemaking, and still involved in the viticulture.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Dry, but certainly not austere, pinot gris with classic pear, quince, ginger and subtle spice flavours. Silken-textured wine with a lingering finish. An ethereal pinot gris with impressive purity and subtle power 23/7/2018." Drink 2018 - 2022

18.5/20 Raymond Chan

"The nose is fresh and full with well-packed aromas of ripe yellow stonefruits entwined with exotic florals along with an amalgam of pear fruit and some fresh fermentation esters. The aromatics show good depth and grows in volume with aeration. Dryish to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate has rich and succulent fruit flavours of yellow stonefruits and pears, with exotic frloral fragrances, some honeysuckle and a little esters lift. The palate is lively with good fruit weight and presence, and soft, lacy acidity balancing the near unctuousness and alcoholic power. The flavours carry to a long, aromatic finish. Match with Asian and Middle Eastern fare over the next 4 years. Hand-picked fruit, clones Sel Ovaille and 2/15, from Bendigo, WBP and cool-fermented in stainless-steel with 10% in seasoned oak to 13.8% alc. and 3 g/L RS. Certified organic fruit. 450 cases made. 18.5/20 Jul 2018 RRP $27.00." Drink 2018 - 2022

Cameron Douglas MS

"The bouquet reveals itself slowly with 3-4 minutes of swirling action needed first. Eventually aromas and flavours of white flowers, quince, pear and a mix of white fleshed fruits emerge. Calm, silky and just dry on the palate with an abundance of acidity, just warm alcohol, silky texture and medium weight. Fairly lengthy finish, balanced, youthful, well made. Best from 2018 through 2022."
