A beautifully elegant yet creamy Chardonnay from Monterey. This comparatively cool spot in California offers the slow ripening needed for class acts like La Crema to craft superb, nuanced Chard. Here the effortless satisfaction of full Malolactic (buttery) fermentation and barrel aging is held in a nice kind of poise by subtle vibrancy and freshness, not to mention mineral, floral and tropical fruit touches. A rare delight and simply classy - superb value.

Its Origins

La Crema in Russian River was established in 1979, long before Sonoma had gained an international reputation for cool climate varietals, Pinot noir and Chardonnay. In 1993 it came under the Jackson family banner, which meant a growth in market possibilities but also in access to top vineyards, infrastructure and talent. However the career of winemaker Elizabeth Grant-Douglas, rising over fourteen years from enologist to Director of Winemaking, illustrates La Crema’s ongoing independent focus, commitment to strict working methods and deep in-house terroir knowledge.

What The Critics Say

5 Stars and 18.5/20 Raymond Chan

"Full, light golden-yellow colour with some depth, a little lighter edged. The nose is very full and voluminous with densely packed and harmoniously interwoven aromas of ripe stonefruit and citrus fruits, and savoury tropical fruits melded with a layer of creamy and nutty barrel-ferment notes. This unfolds plenty of complexing detail. Medium-full bodied, the palate is softly rich with gently mouthfilling flavours of ripe stonefruits and citrus fruits in an amalgam of creamy barrel-ferment and savoury oak complexities. This has richness, mouthfeel and presence, balanced by underlying acidity. The flavours carry to a soft, full, lingering toasty finish. This is a harmonious and already complex layered Chardonnay with stonefruit, citrus fruit, and creamy, nutty oak flavours. Match with poultry and pork over the next 3-4 years. Monterey fruit fully barrel-fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 7 months in 17% new oak, primarily French, undergoing batonnage and 15% MLF. 18.5/20 Jan 2018 RRP $40.00."

94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2015 vintage)

"This is instantly appealing on the nose showing peach, rockmelon, cedar and caramel characters with a hint of oatmeal complexity. The palate is beautifully ripe and vibrant, delivering excellent fruit richness and smooth texture, wonderfully framed by bright acidity, finishing persistent and attractive. At its best: now to 2020. $40.00. NZ Distributor: Procure. Jan 2017."
