En Primeur product: order now for arrival mid 2019. Full of depth and satisfaction but also elegance, this is classy for the price. Mostly Merlot from sandier soils, it unfolds gently bright aromatics of red fruits, with Cabernet Franc touching the background with darker fruit and some structure. In Lalande-de-Pomerol, La Chenade is only a Kilometre from its famous parent estate in Pomerol, Chateau L’Eglise Clinet. With serious pedigree and pleasure, La Chenade will be perfect to decant at the dinner table on arrival in 2019, or to lay down a while longer. Well worth collecting at this low price! To remove foreign exchange risk for our customers, listed prices are all up final landed cost including GST. Payment is due on invoice/order placement, with delivery in mid 2019.

80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc

Its Origins

La Chenade is produced by Chateau Les Cruzelles in Lalande-de-Pomerol, which is owned by Denis Durantou - better known for his famous Pomerol estate, Chateau L’Eglise Clinet. Located in the commune of Neac, the Lez Cruzelles vineyards are only about 1 kilometer from Chateau L’Eglise Clinet - in fact, they are so close you can see Les Cruzelles from L'Eglise. The 10 hectares of Les Cruzelles are planted to 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. This could be the highest proportion of Cabernet Franc in the appellation. The terroir is clay and gravel soil. The majority of the blend for Chateau Les Cruzelles is usually taken up by Merlot. For the vinification of Les Cruzelles, the wine is fermented in tank and is aged in 50%, new, French oak barrels. There is a second wine, Chateau La Chenade, which is aged in an average of 25% new, French oak barrels. Chateau La Chenade is produced from the estates young vines and includes more Cabernet Franc in the blend.

What The Critics Say

90-92/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 La Chenade is plump, juicy and absolutely delicious. Soft and pliant, with silky tannins, the 2016 will drink well upon release. Sweet floral and spice notes infuse a core of dark red stone fruit in this polished, classy Lalande de Pomerol from Denis Durantou. Tasted two times."

90-92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Neal Martin

"The 2016 La Chenade is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc from Denis Durantou's estate in Lalande-de-Pomerol. It was picked 24-29 September for the Merlot and 6 October for the Cabernet Franc at 39 hectoliters per hectare and then matured in 40% new oak. It has a lovely nose that needed some coaxing from the glass, eventually revealing black cherries and touches of bergamot with Earl Grey following later. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, fresh right from the start, very harmonious with an elegant, quite minerally finish. Very elegant, very suave, very promising." Drink 2020 - 2032

16.5/20 Jancis Robinson MW

"80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc on gravelly part of Cruzelles. Always picked first by Denis Durantou because it's the warmest of his terroirs. New oak 40%. 1,700 cases. Luscious and florally perfumed. Not immensely long but hugely enjoyable." Drink 2020 - 2026
