A fresh and mineral Albarino from the Spanish home of this wonderful white grape. Owner Jorge Ordonez was instrumental in the international explosion of what is now Spain's most well known white wine style, bringing modern winemaking and textural lees aging to a formerly rustic tradition. Grown on beautiful pergola vines of really decent age, this proper Rias Baixas Albarino is a serious Eurpoean white made for seafood and the aperitif hour.

Its Origins

Jorge Ordóñez founded Bodegas La Caña in 2003 with the aim of creating an Albariño white wine of great quality. A true terroir-oriented wine. More than ten years later, with the aid of New Zelander oenologist Natalie Christensen, he reached his goal. La Caña 2015 is a varietal Albariño from Rías Baixas coming from a selection of 12 of the 38 little plots planted before 1990 in the Salnés valley. The grapes come from low-yielding vines, an all of the vinification process is carried out following traditional techniques. Manually harvested, 25% of the grapes were fermented in 500 and 600-litre French oak barrels, while the rest completed the process in stainless steel tanks.

What The Critics Say

91/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds (2015 vintage)

"(fermented in stainless steel tanks and large French oak barrels, followed by eight months of aging on its lees in the same tanks and barrels) Pale green-hued yellow. Highly perfumed pear, orange zest and jasmine scents are energized by a chalky mineral accent. Vibrant, sharply focused citrus and orchard fruit flavors show good heft and breadth, and an undertone of florality gains volume with air. Concentrated but also lithe; the persistent, penetrating finish delivers firm mineral cut and a touch of dusty minerality."

90/100 Wine Enthusiast (2015 vintage)

"This pure, chiseled Albariño is light but right on the nose, with lime and stone aromas. Crisp yet comfortable, the palate delivers nectarine, apple and other familiar white-fruit flavors. A stony finish with crisp acidity and a leesy accent is lasting and attractive."

Parker's Wine Advocate, Robert Parker (2015 vintage)

"The different cuvées of Albariño from Bodegas La Caña include the 2015 Albarino, which is 100% Albariño aged eight months sur lie with one-fourth of it in large neutral oak and the balance in stainless-steel tanks. It is a large cuvée of 12,000 cases and the wine is another excellent value. Coming from the northern part of the appellation, the wine has good texture, lots of wet, stony minerality, crisp acids, fresh and delicate apricot and honey notes, with spring flowers in the background. This light-bodied wine should be drunk over the next year."
