Kalleske's story began in 1853 with the Moppa vineyard, where sandy loam over red clay allow vines to thrive in Barossa's heat. The conditions in 2016 were spectacular, so expect finesse but heaps of power and pleasure. Hedonistic yet artisan and organic, at this price the Moppa is stunning wine to decant soon or cellar.

Its Origins

In South Australia's Barossa Valley, the Kalleske family have been farming and growing grapes since 1853 near the village of Greenock. They are one of the region's leading grape-growing families consistently growing some of the Barossa's best quality grapes. After six generations of growing grapes, winemaker and seventh generation family member, Troy Kalleske, together with his brother Tony, established the Kalleske winery and made the first ‘Kalleske’ wine. The winery is situated on the family estate where traditional winemaking techniques ensure the vineyard realises its full potential as wine. The 120 acre vineyard is planted to Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Mataro, Petit Verdot, Durif, Viognier, Tempranillo and Zinfandel. Vines vary in age with the oldest remaining vineyard dating back to 1875 and an overall average vine age of about 50 years. The vineyard is low yielding with grapes grown organically and biodynamically and the winery is also certified biodynamic/organic.

"Moppa Shiraz is named after the small district of Moppa, just North of Greenock, where the Kalleske farm and vineyard was established in 1853. Sourced entirely from our Kalleske Moppa vineyard, a trace of Viognier and Petit Verdot has been added to this Shiraz giving it a contemporary edge. The palate is rich and flavoursome. The tannin profile is superb, fine grained but fleshy adding texture and definition. Well structured, this is a complex and well balanced wine with fruit at the fore but background oak in support. Generous in flavour, it's completed by a very lengthy finish. Moppa is an expressive Shiraz that can be enjoyed now or will cellar well in the medium to long term."

The wine contains some co-fermented viognier (5%) and back-blended petit verdot (10%); wild open ferment, hand pump overs, 7-12 days on skins, matured in a cocktail of French, American and Hungarian oak (25% new) for 14 months. Dense purple-crimson, it launches an Exocet missile of the blackest of black fruits, dark chocolate and strong tannins. Drink by 2034."
