In South Australia's Barossa Valley, the Kalleske family have been farming and growing grapes since 1853 near the village of Greenock. They are one of the region's leading grape-growing families consistently growing some of the Barossa's best quality grapes. After six generations of growing grapes, winemaker and seventh generation family member, Troy Kalleske, together with his brother Tony, established the Kalleske winery and made the first ‘Kalleske’ wine. The winery is situated on the family estate where traditional winemaking techniques ensure the vineyard realises its full potential as wine. The 120 acre vineyard is planted to Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Mataro, Petit Verdot, Durif, Viognier, Tempranillo and Zinfandel. Vines vary in age with the oldest remaining vineyard dating back to 1875 and an overall average vine age of about 50 years. The vineyard is low yielding with grapes grown organically and biodynamically and the winery is also certified biodynamic/organic.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on 2016 vintage
"Dodger Tempranillo 2016 is medium-red in colour. The aroma displays curious complexity with both sweet and savoury nuances evident. There is strawberry, almonds, tobacco, liqueur cherries, spice, blackcurrant and a hint of earth. These sweet and savoury characters continue to the medium bodied palate. The natural tannins are prominent, but finely integrated adding structure and definition. The wild fruit flavours intrigue throughout unburdened by oak. The wine is well structured and poised with bright acidity. A lingering finish completes a varietally true Tempranillo. Dodger can be enjoyed now or over the next eight years."
93/100 Halliday's Australian Wine Companion, Jane Faulkner (2015 vintage)
"A powerful, savoury-toned wine with smoked meats and charry nuances not oak though, fresh tobacco and dried herbs with a smidge of cherries and pips. Just the right amount of crunchy acidity to keep this lively."
